Bryan Studios was founded in 1927 by Mr. Henry Martin Bryan Snr. Mr. Bryan went to Cuba in the 1920’s and learnt Photography, upon returning to Jamaica he travelled island-wide doing portraits and eventually set up his first studio in West Parade. Henry Martin Bryan, Snr later acquired and established his studio at 52 Duke Street, Downtown Kingston.
Henry Martin Bryan, Snr. married Cynthia Olive Aiken and she joined her husband in the photography business; their union produced two Sons, Calvin Bryan and Henry Martin Bryan, Jnr. (Quito). After completing his studies, Calvin joined his parents in the family business, Quito joined him later after resigning his job in banking and going to New York to study photography. The Bryan Brothers took over the family business in 1973, with the passing of Henry Martin Bryan, Snr.
With a renewed vision and limitless opportunities the Bryan Brothers acquired 46 East Queen Street, Downtown Kingston and later expanded the business by opening its present head office at 38c Constant Spring Road, Kings Plaza.
Bryan Studios became involved in many corporate social initiatives, and as such, became a Jamaican household name. In the 1970s, the company’s Managing Director, Henry Martin Bryan, Jnr. (Quito) served as the President of the Professional Photographer’s Association of Jamaica, and sat on Boards of many Private and Public Sector Companies.
In 1982 the family’s success was dampened by the sudden death of Henry Martin Bryan, Jnr. “Quito”; who on his way to a Professional Photographer’s Convention in California was killed in a Pan American Airline crash in New Orleans. He was one of eighty-six passengers who perished, and the only Jamaica on board, most of the passengers on board were photographers.
Despite this, the company continued to grow and gained momentum in the Jamaica business sector. Bryan Studios is now a 3rd Generation photography business. The company celebrated 90th year (1927-2017) in 2017 and is successfully managed by a talented team of professionals; Calvin Bryan, Snr. J.P., Chief Executive Officer, Jenetia Andeson J.P., Chartered Accountant, Director and Financial Controller, Paul-Hasini Bryan, Senior Photographer and Director, Nicole Bryan-Jacobs, Director/Company Secretary and Human Resource Manager and Lisa Bryan, Customer Experience and Sales Manager.
